Spirit of Olympism to motivate students of MGSKL

In conjunction with their annual school sports day on June 21 and in support of the upcoming London Olympics, the Senior Methodist Girls School of Kuala Lumpur (MGSKL) or better known as SMK (P) Methodist Kuala Lumpur organized an Olympism Week to develop and raise the spirit of Olympism among teachers and students.  Emphasizing on the values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect, the school Principal Mdm. Phoon Yoke Meng who believes strongly in Olympic Education delivered a motivating and encouraging speech to launch the Olympism Week addressing all students to instil and practice the Olympic Creed which reads “The most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well”.

During the Olympism Week which began on June 18, Olympism workshops were held for the Form 1 and Form 4 students and the highlight of the workshops was the national athletes’ forum.  Equestrian national athletes, Quzandria Nur Dato’ Sri Mahamad Fathil and Tunku Nazroff Tunku Mokhsin were invited to speak to the students and they shared their experience as athletes and their school years.  After the session, Quzandria who is Malaysia’s first Dressage Grand Prix rider was all praise for the Olympism Week and said that she strongly supports school programs that emphasize the importance of sports.

The Annual School Sport’s Day that was held in Stadium Mini Bandar Sri Permaisuri on June 21 included a torch design competition in which each sport house had to create their version of an Olympic torch using recyclable materials.  Other than the torch, the school also created their own school sports day flag and it was raised in the stadium together with the school flag for the entire duration of the event.  This is the second year that MGSKL is reenacting the practices of the Olympic Games ceremonies that was introduced by Ms. Low Mai Keok, the former Senior Assistant of Co-Curriculum.

Throughout the week, a series of exciting activities and programs were organized to attract and stimulate students’ interest to find out more about the Olympic Games; it’s history, athletes and most importantly the essence of good values.  To reach out to the students more effectively, five outstanding MGSKL students who excelled in sports, extra-curricular activities and studies were nominated as Olympism Ambassadors to inspire their peers and juniors.  They assisted during the workshops and acted as guides in the library where a mini Olympics and Youth Olympics exhibition was set up.  Olympics themed poster, notice board and essay competitions were also conducted.

As the last day of the Olympism week marked 35 days towards the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympic Games, a countdown panel was created and presented to the entire school.  The countdown panel was then displayed on the Olympism notice board in the school canteen.  This also marks the start of a 35 day program (including weekends) where a snippet of Olympic information will be read every morning during the school assembly by one of the five student Olympism Ambassadors right up to the day of the Opening Ceremony.
The Countdown Panel to the 2012 London Olympics was launched on June 22 marking 35 days towards the Opening Ceremony.
Besides promoting sports and an active lifestyle through the Olympism week program and activities, the school also aims to use this medium as a way to improve the English language.
